Bristol’s streets carry messages of their own. Stickers, stencils, graffiti and small acts of alteration interrupt the city’s everyday visual order. Undercurrent: Bristol gathers fragments of this street-level expression, a visual language threaded through the city.
I often work this way as a kind of visual scavenger hunt, using the camera to channel the hypervigilance I experience with PTSD into looking for details in the environment. The act of photographic seeing gives that heightened attention somewhere to go, making it easier for me to travel and explore unfamiliar places.
