I somehow missed this Artist Feature from Art Noise when it was first posted, but it was a nice discovery today.
As part of Kingston’s celebration of the 10th anniversary of The Tragically Hip’s final concert, Art Noise is presenting No Dress Rehearsal: A Hip Inspired Art Exhibition, a group exhibition here in the band’s hometown.
My contribution is the first public showing of work from a conceptual series linking music and photography. The three photographs are Long Time Running (4:23), Grace, Too (5:34), and Ahead by a Century (5:25).
Each photograph is made while the corresponding song plays on a turntable. I open the camera shutter when the song begins and close it when the song ends. During those few minutes, the record keeps spinning, so the camera accumulates all of that movement into a single image. The label’s colours blur into circular bands, while the tracks and the gaps between songs remain visible as concentric rings in the vinyl. The resulting photograph becomes a visual record of the song’s duration.
The exhibition continues at Art Noise, 290 Princess Street in Kingston, through September 30.
