True Stray

An overturned shopping cart frozen at the edge of a river in winter, partially embedded in ice, with smooth long exposure water surrounding it and a rail bridge visible in the background.

Overturned shopping cart at the river’s edge, classified as a Class B True Stray, specimen B/13, B/21. From Meditations on the Rideau.

This photograph was made during exploratory work for Meditations on the Rideau. The image shows an overturned shopping cart lodged at the boundary between river and shore in winter, its wire frame interwoven with vegetation and partially encased in ice. A long exposure renders the moving water as a continuous surface around the cart.
In the taxonomy outlined by Julian Montague in The Stray Shopping Carts of Eastern North America, the cart is classified as a Class B True Stray. Its location and condition suggest Type 13 Complex Vandalism, followed by Type 21 Naturalization, resulting in a specimen designation of B/13, B/21.
